Colours play such an important role in the interior design of any home. They give a space its energy and bring it alive. Through combinations of colors and light (both natural and artificial) you can achieve different feels, whether cool, fresh, warm, pleasant, light or elegant. The use of different colours can help make a space feel smaller or bigger, move elements away or closer, highlight them or hide away any imperfections.
Below are some features of blue, characteristics of those who like this colour, and suggestions for its most appropriate use, both indoors and in combination with the rest of the interior.
Blue, along with red and green, are basic colours. Yellow is complementary to blue and the two mixed together creates green, which combines their properties. Blue represents the sky and the sea and so we associate it with open spaces, freedom, intuition, imagination, inspiration and sensitivity. It also symbolizes trust, loyalty, honesty, wisdom, self-confidence, stability and intelligence.
So it is unsurprising that lovers of the colour blue are known to be reliable, trustworthy, genuine and responsible, and value peace and harmony in their everyday life.
INTERIOR
There are many different shades of blue - light, dark, warm and cold. The use of an intense shade of blue in an interior requires a certain amount of thought and consideration for the layout itself. Rich shades are therefore most suited for rooms where the windows face South, Southeast or Southwest. Conversely, the use of blue in North-facing rooms will create a cold and gloomy effect. You should also be careful of using royal blue in large, spacious rooms to avoid creating a depressing feel. Instead, we recommend using a light turquoise blue (such as B01-3 on the HGMIX colour card) or sky blue (such as B19-5 on the HGMIX colour card), which in this case are suitable for contrasting accents on armchairs, curtains or cushions.
Blue’s positive physiological effects include lowering the heartbeat and rate of breathing, calm, stimulating mental activity, introspection and concentration; blue is known as the colour of peace and rest, so it is suitable for the bedroom, bathroom, study and all rooms intended for relaxation. It is not suitable for dining, entertainment or recreation rooms, or for the basement.
How to combine blue in interior design?
The classic combination of blue and white creates a fresh and light feel. White totally dominates all shades of blue: from cobalt and indigo to coastal blue and turquoise. The combination is reflected in the maritime theme, which is lovely for the bathroom or nursery.
Warm sand and beige shades complement blue really well and make it warmer. It also goes well with shades of yellow and orange, where the contrast creates a special, unusual interior in an eclectic style. Make sure you combine warm shades together; and cold shades together.
Those of you who like bold, stronger colors can combine blue with red, purple or pink, as these colors increase blue’s saturation. These kinds of contrasting combinations will appeal to those of you who are unafraid of experimenting.
A calm, elegant version is achieved by combining blue with beige and brown shades, and with wooden furniture made of dark walnut, cherry, chestnut, teak, mahogany or dark oak.
We recommend using a combination of several different shades to all of you who like intense blue shades, as this breaks the monotony. A dark blue wall is best combined with yellow or white furniture, which provides the right amount of contrast.
